The short version
Patch gaiters stay put; strap gaiters fit anything. A gaiter that hooks to a Velcro patch glued to the heel of the shoe will not slide down, which is the whole problem with gaiters. It also commits that pair of shoes to that gaiter. Strap-under designs work with any shoe and slide more, and the strap under the sole wears through on rough ground. If you run one pair of trail shoes at a time, the patch system is worth the glue.

Do gaiters actually help?
On terrain with loose grit, sand or small stones, considerably. Every stone that does not get into your shoe is a stop you did not make and a hot spot you did not develop. On smooth trail they are extra fabric and warmth for little benefit.
Do they make feet hotter?
Slightly, yes, and the lightweight mesh ones far less than heavier hiking gaiters. In genuine heat that is a real trade against keeping sand out.
Will the Velcro patch damage my shoes?
It is glued to the heel counter and it is effectively permanent. It does not usually affect how the shoe performs, and it does mean the shoe now has a patch on it. That is worth knowing before you glue a brand new pair.
