The short version

Sleeves let you choose your own sock; socks compress the foot too. The honest framing first: the evidence for compression improving running performance is weak, while the evidence for it feeling better and helping perceived recovery is more consistent. Given that, the practical difference is coverage. A sleeve leaves your foot free to wear the sock that suits it, which matters over long distances where sock choice decides blisters. A full sock adds foot compression and one less layer.

Common questions

Does compression actually improve performance?

The evidence is weak. Studies looking at running performance have generally not found meaningful improvements, while findings on perceived soreness and comfort are more favourable. Buying these because they feel good is reasonable; buying them expecting to run faster is not supported.

Do they help recovery?

Reported soreness tends to be lower, and objective recovery markers are less consistent. Wearing them after a long run is low risk and may well feel better, which for most runners is enough of a reason.

Is compression safe for everyone?

If you have circulation problems, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, or a history of deep vein thrombosis, talk to a doctor before wearing graduated compression, particularly overnight. Anything that leaves marks, numbness or discolouration is too tight.

Choose the CEP Core Run Tall Compression Socks if…

You want one garment doing both jobs and you get on with the foot section. Graduated compression through the foot and calf is what the research protocols usually test, and if a sock fits your foot well it removes a layer and a seam. The main risk is that a compression sock that does not fit your foot cannot be swapped for one that does.

Choose the Rymora Calf Compression Sleeves if…

You already know which running sock keeps your feet intact. Sleeves are far cheaper, they can be pulled off if your calves get hot, and they let you change socks at an aid station without taking everything off. For most ultrarunners this is the more practical of the two.

A note on compression boots

Pneumatic compression boots are a different mechanism again, and the published evidence for them is about perceived recovery rather than performance. We go through it in the Normatec 3 Legs review.
